Generalist 4 - 8 Teacher Certification required for this position.

 

Primary Purpose:

 

Provide students assigned to DAEP for disciplinary purposes with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Maintain highly structured and orderly environment.

 

Qualifications:

 

            Education/Certification:

            Bachelor’s degree from accredited university

            Valid Texas teaching certificate 

 

  

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

 

Instructional Strategies

 

  1. Work with teachers and campus administrators to create and maintain an orderly and highly structured environment.
  2. Work with individual students to complete assignments given by classroom teacher.
  3. Consult classroom teachers regarding student assignments.
  4. Distribute, collect, and check student assignments for completeness.
  5. Maintain individual files of completed student assignments and return to classroom teacher.
  6. Manage student behavior and administer discipline according to board policies, administrative regulations, and Individual Education Plans, 504 materials, MDRs, and BIPs.
  7. Record student attendance and discipline referrals using personal computer.
  8. Supervise students assigned to DAEP during lunch and bathroom breaks.
  9. Consult with counselors regarding student emotional behavior.
  10. Maintain confidentiality.
  11. Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
  12. Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to modify regular curricula as needed and assist special education students in regular classes with assignments.
  13. Participate in ARD Committee meetings on a regular basis.
  14. Present subject matter according to guidelines established by IEP.
  15. Use technology in teaching/learning process.
  16. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Classroom Management and Organization:

 

  1. Manage student behavior and administer discipline. This includes intervening in crisis situations and physically restraining students as necessary according to IEP.
  2. Consult with classroom teachers regarding management of student behavior according to IEP.
  3. Consult district and outside resource people regarding education, social, medical, and personal needs of students.
  4. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

 

Communication

 

  1. Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with  parents, students, principals, and teachers.
  2. Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members
  3. Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
  4. Keep informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for special education teachers.
  5. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
  6. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.

 

Working Conditions:

 

            Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

            Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending,

            kneeling, pushing, and pulling. Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment,

            desks, and other classroom or adaptive equipment. May be required to lift and

            position students with physical disabilities; control behavior through physical

            restraint; and assist nonambulatory students. Exposure to biological hazards.
